Your computer is only as safe as you let it be! Most virus and spyware infections can easily be avoided by maintaining up to date software, and by taking the time to be cautious in what you are downloading from the web.

1.       Keep a properly updated Antivirus and Antispyware program running on your computer at all times. In today's internet world, it is very important to protect your computer from potential dangers. We do NOT recommend using Norton's Antivirus as this program can slow down your computer, conflict with other programs, and there are actually a number of viruses that specifically target this program. See the Links page for some great Free Antivirus and Antispyware programs.

2.       In following #1, never download programs from unknown sources - especially file sharing places like Limewire. Many of the files on file sharing networks are infected with spyware and viruses. Spyware and Viruses can be hidden in everything from music files to screen savers, and file sharing services like this just spread them around even more. In addition, you should never open an email attachment from anyone, even friends and family, unless you specifically know they were sending you something. The reason for this is that many virus/spyware programs can take over a computer and use a person's email address book to send copies of the virus/spyware without the person even knowing it - be especially careful of any .exe, zip, rar, and .scr files.

3.    Beware of Virus and Spyware warnings you may get on your computer - make sure they are actually coming from your installed antivirus or antispyware program - certain spyware will send you 'fake' warnings that your computer is infected and then send you to a page to download a program to remove these infections - in reality, what you will then download is just more spyware.
