Of course it is hard to choose hardware on this basis, as so much of it is made overseas. However, Apple as one of the industry leaders has a responsibility not only to it's customers, but to the world to set an example. My main beef is that Apple has knowingly entered into contracts with companies with histories of labor and worker abuses with the excuse after the fact that they are trying to make things better. It should be a Requirement of any contract that certain standards be followed at all times, and Apple should be leading the pack when it comes to setting these standards. This is not to excuse Dell, HP and the others who all need to do the same thing. To me, Apple seems more and more to be all about profit, all about controlling, and all about trying to skirt the rules, and they want the whole ball - hardware, software, accessories. As a matter of fact, they more than any company try to excert total control over their products. Microsoft doesn't care what hardware you run on, so you are free to chooose, Dell, HP etc doesn't care what software you run, or what kind of accessories you use, so you are free to choose, you can even mix and match hardware as needed. But Apple, they require that you use their hardware, their software and pretty much their accessories, so with that in mind, with greater control comes greater responsibility.

I understand what you're saying, but ...

Are Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Seagate, etc etc etc bastions of morality? I'm not justifying Apple's business choices, but how do you choose software and hardware that fulfill moral requirements?

Linux or *BSD are great, but the hardware to run them on are of relatively unknown origins...
